The question “can you get a piercing during pregnancy?” is one of the most searched questions on Google by girls who are expecting a baby and want to continue expressing their personality through their body. The answer, if we want to be clear and professional, is: no, you shouldn’t get piercings during pregnancy.
During pregnancy the body goes through profound transformations:
Hormonal changes that make the skin more sensitive.
Altered immune defenses, with increased risk of infections.
Areas of the body that change (such as the belly, breasts, nipples), making it impossible to predict how a piercing will heal.
👉 For these reasons, we do not perform piercings on pregnant women . And we also recommend waiting at least a month after finishing breastfeeding before thinking about it.
Why You Should Avoid Piercing During Pregnancy
Here are the main reasons why piercings and pregnancy don't go together :
✅ Risk of infections
The immune system during pregnancy may have an altered response to bacterial infections. A piercing infection may:
Request antibiotics (avoid if possible during pregnancy).
Extend beyond the hole area.
Cause painful inflammation and scarring.
✅ Slowed healing
The pregnant body has other biological priorities. A fresh wound takes longer to heal, and often does not heal well.
✅ Allergic reactions and swelling
During pregnancy, the skin can develop reactions even to “safe” materials, especially if the jewelry is not of the highest quality (titanium, bioplastic, etc.).
✅ Deformations due to physical changes
If you pierce your belly button, nipple, or any area that is subject to tension, the skin may stretch, sag, or form keloids.
Piercings already present during pregnancy: what to do?
If you are pregnant and already have one or more piercings, you do not necessarily have to remove them immediately. It depends on the area, how the pregnancy is evolving, and any discomfort. Here is a guide to understand what to do.
🔹 Belly Button Piercing During Pregnancy
The most problematic. With the growing belly:
The jewelry may “pull” and cause pain.
The hole may become inflamed or torn.
In some cases there is a risk of spontaneous rejection .
🟡 Practical tips:
Uses flexible PTFE (bioplastic) rods.
Switch to long, soft jewelry designed for pregnancy.
Monitor the area carefully: if it becomes red, it is better to remove the piercing.

🔹 Nipple Piercing and Pregnancy
It is not recommended to keep them if you want to breastfeed. The nipples undergo enormous changes and the risk of:
Infections during breastfeeding,
Interference with the infant's sucking,
Minor trauma to the skin or ducts...
...is too high. Better to remove them towards the end of pregnancy.
🔹 Piercings in other areas (ear, nose, lips)
Generally safe, as long as they have healed and are not irritated. Keep the area clean, avoid unnecessary touching, and monitor for any swelling or changes.
Piercings and childbirth: should they be removed?
Yes. Before giving birth, especially in case of:
Cesarean , abdominal piercings must be removed.
Natural birth , genital and nipple piercings should be removed for safety.
Tip: Bring a sterile container with you to store them in the hospital.
When can I get a piercing again after pregnancy?
After giving birth and/or breastfeeding, it is important to give your body time to regain its balance. For this reason, we recommend waiting at least a month after breastfeeding before getting a new piercing, especially if:
You breastfed for a long time.
You have had major changes in your body.
You want to get a piercing in a “delicate” area (like your belly button or nipple).
✅ In short: piercings and pregnancy
